The Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus) is a peaceful, schooling surgeonfish named for the five bold black bars that stripe its silvery-white body — a pattern reminiscent of an old-fashioned prison uniform. Found across the Indo-Pacific, this is one of the most widely distributed tang species in the world and one of the most beginner-friendly members of the family for hobbyists ready to commit to a larger system.
Unlike most tangs, Convict Tangs are genuinely social and do best when kept in small groups of three or more in adequately sized systems. In the wild they form large feeding schools that overwhelm the territorial defenses of damselfish and other algae-guarding species, allowing them to graze freely across the reef. This grazing behavior translates beautifully to the home aquarium, where they make excellent natural algae control on live rock and aquascape surfaces.
Diet should be primarily herbivorous — offer dried marine algae (nori) daily along with herbivore pellets, spirulina-enriched flake, and occasional mysis or brine shrimp for variety. They are reef safe and generally peaceful with all tankmates including other tangs, making them one of the few surgeonfish that play well with their own kind. Provide strong flow, pristine water quality, and a minimum of 125 gallons for a single specimen, with larger systems required for groups.
At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
