Blue Hippo Tang

The Blue Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus), also known as the Regal Tang, Pacific Blue Tang, or famously as "Dory" from Finding Nemo, is one of the most iconic and recognizable fish in the entire saltwater hobby. Brilliant royal blue body marked with a bold black palette-shaped pattern across the side, plus a striking yellow tail — a color combination that has captivated reefers for decades.

Blue Hippo Tangs are active, peaceful, and surprisingly playful for their size. They cruise constantly through open water and rockwork, grazing on film algae and weaving in and out of corals. As juveniles they can be shy and prone to hiding when stressed, but mature adults become bold centerpiece fish that recognize their keepers at feeding time.

Tank requirements: Despite often being sold small, Blue Hippo Tangs grow to 12 inches and are constant swimmers. They require a minimum of 180 gallons with substantial horizontal swimming room. Cramping them in undersized tanks leads to stunted growth and stress-related illness.

Health watch: Blue Hippo Tangs are notoriously prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) and other parasitic infections, especially under stress. Stable water parameters, a quarantine period before introduction, and a stress-free environment are essential. Reef-safe and peaceful with most tankmates, but may show aggression toward other tangs in smaller systems.
