The Lamarck Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck) — also known as the Freckletail Lyretail Angelfish or Lamarck's Angelfish — is one of the most unique and reef-aquarium-friendly angelfish in the entire hobby. Unlike most members of the angelfish family, Genicanthus species are open-water plankton feeders rather than grazers, which makes them one of the very few angelfish that are genuinely 100% reef safe with no risk to corals, clams, or sessile inverts of any kind.

This species is also remarkable for its pronounced sexual dimorphism — males and females look so different they were originally classified as separate species. Males display a silvery body with four bold black horizontal stripes running the length of the body, a long flowing lyre-shaped tail, and a single bright yellow spot on the forehead. Females share the silvery base color and lyretail but lack the forehead spot and feature a black-edged dorsal fin and tail tips instead. Both sexes are elegant, graceful, and refined swimmers that glide through the open water column rather than hugging the rockwork.

Native to the deeper outer reef slopes of the western Pacific, Lamarck Angels are peaceful and do best in larger systems with plenty of open swimming space. A minimum of 125 gallons is recommended, with 150+ gallons preferred for keeping a confirmed male/female pair — they are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning all individuals start female and the dominant fish transitions to male over time. Diet should include a variety of mysis, brine shrimp, marine flake, quality angelfish formulas, and frozen preparations enriched with sponge and algae. They are peaceful with nearly all tankmates and make an exceptional choice for hobbyists seeking an angelfish that won't harm their corals.

At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
