The Orange Shoulder Tang (Acanthurus olivaceus) is one of the most dramatic transformation stories in the saltwater hobby. Juveniles are solid bright yellow from head to tail — looking almost identical to a Yellow Tang at first glance. As they mature, they undergo a stunning color shift: the body transitions to smoky charcoal-gray with a bold orange "shoulder" patch behind the eye, framed by an iridescent blue border. Two completely different fish in one lifetime.

Orange Shoulder Tangs are exceptional algae grazers and active swimmers. They constantly cruise the rockwork picking at film algae, hair algae, and even tougher nuisance algaes that some tangs ignore — making them one of the most useful tangs for keeping a large reef tank clean. Peaceful with most tankmates, though like all tangs, they can be territorial with other Acanthurus species in smaller systems.

Tank requirements: Due to their adult size (up to 14 inches) and constant swimming, Orange Shoulder Tangs require a minimum of 180 gallons with significant horizontal swimming room. Not suitable for smaller systems even when purchased as juveniles — they grow fast.

Hardy, reef-safe, and one of the most rewarding large tangs you can keep. Watching the color transformation from yellow juvenile to gray adult is part of the experience.

At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
