The Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus) is one of the most striking surgeonfish available to the home aquarist. Its deep chocolate-brown body is offset by a brilliant white facial mask, a bold orange swoosh along the dorsal fin, and electric blue and yellow accents on the tail and fin edges. Often confused with the more delicate Powder Black Tang (Acanthurus nigrofuscus), A. japonicus is the hardier and more reef-friendly of the two and a far better choice for most hobbyists.
Native to the reefs of the western Pacific, the Powder Brown Tang is an active grazer that spends its day patrolling rockwork in search of microalgae and biofilm. A well-established aquarium with plenty of mature live rock is essential to provide constant grazing opportunities and reduce stress. Supplement its diet with dried marine algae (nori) clipped to the glass daily, along with a varied rotation of mysis, brine, and high-quality herbivore pellets to maintain color and immune health.
This species requires excellent water quality, strong flow, and a minimum of 125 gallons to thrive long-term. Like all tangs, they are susceptible to ich and HLLE when stressed or kept in cramped systems, so quarantine and stable parameters are non-negotiable. They are reef safe and generally peaceful with non-tang tankmates, though territorial disputes with other surgeonfish are common — house only one tang per system unless the tank is very large and tangs are introduced simultaneously.
At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
