Banggai Cardinalfish

The Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) is one of the most distinctive and recognizable fish in the entire marine aquarium hobby. Its silvery body is overlaid with bold black vertical bars and adorned with delicate white spots scattered across its fins and flanks. Three elongated, sail-like fins — dorsal, anal, and forked caudal — give it an almost otherworldly silhouette that no other reef fish can match. Endemic exclusively to the small Banggai Archipelago of Indonesia, this species has captured the hearts of aquarists worldwide since its introduction to the hobby.

Banggai Cardinals are unique among aquarium fish in that they are paternal mouthbrooders — males incubate fertilized eggs in their mouth for around 20 days, then continue to shelter the fully-formed juveniles for several more days after hatching. This remarkable reproductive strategy means captive breeding is achievable in the home aquarium, and the vast majority of specimens sold today are aquacultured rather than wild-caught, easing pressure on their threatened wild population.

This species is peaceful, slow-moving, and 100% reef safe with corals and inverts. They prefer to hover in small groups near rockwork, branching corals, or longspine urchins, which they naturally associate with for protection in the wild. They do best in groups of three or more in tanks of 30 gallons or larger, or as confirmed mated pairs in smaller systems — random pairings of two often end in aggression as they mature. Diet is straightforward: mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality marine pellets are all readily accepted. Their calm demeanor and striking appearance make them a perfect centerpiece for peaceful nano and mid-sized reefs.
