The Blackcap Basslet (Gramma melacara) is one of the most elegant and reef-aquarium-friendly fish in the hobby. Native to deep Caribbean reefs and drop-offs, this stunning species features a vivid magenta-purple body crowned with a jet-black "cap" that extends from the upper lip down the dorsal line — a striking contrast that makes it instantly recognizable. Closely related to the more common Royal Gramma, the Blackcap is rarer, more refined, and arguably more beautiful.
In the wild, Blackcap Basslets are found on shaded vertical reef walls at depths of 50 to 200 feet, where they orient themselves to swim along ledges, overhangs, and the underside of caves. This natural behavior translates directly to the aquarium — they prefer dim, cave-rich aquascapes with plenty of vertical rockwork to claim as territory. Don't be surprised to see one hovering upside-down beneath an overhang; it's completely normal.
Blackcaps are peaceful, hardy, and 100% reef safe — they will not bother corals, clams, or inverts of any kind, including small shrimp. They readily accept a varied diet of mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. House only one per tank unless the system is very large, as they can be territorial with their own species and similar-shaped basslets. They make excellent tankmates for nano and mid-sized reefs and are an outstanding choice for hobbyists seeking a peaceful, brilliantly colored fish that won't outgrow a 30-gallon system.
At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
