Chocolate Mimic Tang

The Chocolate Mimic Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) — also known as the Yellow Mimic Tang, Mimic Lemonpeel Tang, or Chocolate Surgeonfish — is one of the most fascinating species in the surgeonfish family. As juveniles, these fish are bright yellow and remarkably mimic the appearance of the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissima), gaining protection by blending in with the more aggressive, territorial dwarf angel. As they mature, they transform completely into a rich chocolate brown adult with subtle orange and blue accents around the gill plate, eye, and caudal spine.

This natural color transformation is one of the most dramatic in the marine aquarium hobby and makes A. pyroferus a truly unique addition to any large reef system. The shift typically begins between 3 and 4 inches and completes around 5 to 6 inches, with some color variation depending on which dwarf angel species they evolved to mimic in their native range.

Chocolate Mimic Tangs are reef safe, peaceful for a tang, and generally easier to acclimate than many of their cousins. Provide a minimum of 125 gallons with mature live rock for grazing, strong flow, and pristine water quality. Diet should be primarily herbivorous — offer dried marine algae (nori) daily, supplemented with herbivore pellets, spirulina flake, and occasional meaty foods like mysis. They are typically peaceful with non-tang tankmates but will defend territory against other surgeonfish, so house only one tang per system unless the aquarium is very large.
