The Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish (Dendrochirus brachypterus) — also known as the Shortfin Lionfish, Dwarf Lionfish, or Shortspine Turkeyfish — is the most popular and aquarium-friendly member of the lionfish family. Compared to the giant Volitans Lionfish that can grow to 15 inches and require massive systems, the Fuzzy Dwarf stays under 7 inches and thrives in tanks as small as 50 gallons, making the dramatic lionfish look accessible to mid-sized aquarists without compromising on personality or presence.

This species displays a remarkable range of color variation — specimens can appear in mottled reds, oranges, browns, yellows, or even striking purples and pinks, often with intricate banding across the body and dramatic feathery pectoral fins that fan out like ornate hand fans when spread. The "fuzzy" appearance comes from small filaments and skin tabs scattered across the body, which provide camouflage among reef rubble and sponge habitats in their native western Pacific range.

Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish are predatory, slow-moving ambush hunters that should only be kept with tankmates too large to be eaten — anything that fits in their surprisingly large mouth will be consumed, including small fish, shrimp, and micro-inverts. They are 100% reef safe with corals and clams, making them an excellent choice for predator-themed reef systems. Diet should consist of meaty marine foods like silversides, krill, chopped seafood, and quality frozen formulas; many will eventually accept high-quality pellets with patience. Important: lionfish possess venomous dorsal spines — handle with extreme care during maintenance, and never reach into the tank without awareness of the fish's location. A sting is painful but rarely dangerous to healthy adults; those with cardiac conditions or seafood allergies should consult a doctor before purchase.

At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
