The Harlequin Basslet (Serranus tigrinus) — also known as the Harlequin Bass or Tiger Serranus — is a small, hardy, and endlessly entertaining Caribbean reef fish prized for its bold patterning and curious personality. Its cream-yellow body is overlaid with intricate black vertical bars and tiger-like markings, giving it the harlequin appearance that earned the species its common name. Native to the shallow reefs and seagrass beds of the western Atlantic, this is one of the most personality-driven small predators in the marine aquarium hobby.
Harlequin Basslets are members of the sea bass family rather than the true basslet family (Grammatidae), and their behavior reflects that lineage. They are bold, intelligent, and constantly active — perching on rockwork, hopping between aquascape ledges, and observing their surroundings with sharp predatory awareness. Despite their small size, they think and act like miniature groupers and quickly become one of the most recognizable personalities in any tank they inhabit.
This species is reef safe with corals but should not be trusted with small shrimp, micro-hermits, or very small fish, as they are opportunistic predators that will hunt anything that fits in their mouth. They are otherwise peaceful with appropriately sized tankmates and adapt readily to aquarium life, accepting a wide variety of meaty foods including mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. A 30-gallon minimum with plenty of rockwork and hiding spots is ideal, and they can be kept singly or as a confirmed mated pair.
At Ocean To You, every fish is quarantined and observed before sale. We don't sell sick fish.
